Supplements???

There seems to be a supplement to whatever ails you. But do you need them supplements?

Dietary supplements are all the rage right now. Walk into any specialty store, boutique, or even Sephora and you'll see a plethora of nutritional supplements guaranteed to benefit both health and beauty. But do you need them?

In an ideal world, you would get all the nutrients you need from the food you eat. Unfortunately, most of us do not consume adequate amounts of micronutrients through our diet due to demanding schedules, accessibility or taste preferences.

Fortunately, there are many different types of supplements, but not all are created equal.

Do you need supplements? From traditional vitamin and mineral supplements to herbal potions and adaptogens, there are a variety of options to meet your nutritional goals and concerns. That's not to say we shouldn't focus on eating healthy foods, but even healthy eating in general can use a supplement boost.

While not everyone needs supplements, taking a vitamin every day helps fill the gap, like a vitamin "insurance policy." Here are 3 more reasons why you should supplement your healthy diet.

You are a following a specific diet. If you follow a diet that excludes certain food groups, such as Eating foods such as paleo, raw, ketogenic, or gluten-free puts you at greater risk of not getting certain nutrients from foods. For example, vegans and vegetarians must ensure they have an adequate supply of vitamin B12, iodine, zinc and iron. And Paleo dieters may need to take supplemental calcium and vitamins B and D

You belong to a certain ethnic group. Older adults over the age of 50 have higher needs for vitamin D and B12 and will likely benefit from supplementation. Vitamin D and calcium are particularly important for postmenopausal women as they are at greater risk of bone density loss due to hormonal changes.

The nutritional needs of pregnant and lactating women are also escalating, and supplementation is a good way to ensure they are meeting the daily amounts needed for proper fetal growth and development.

You have particular concerns about beauty. While you can get many nutrients from food alone, consider supplementation if you have specific beauty concerns. For example, biotin supplementation can help strengthen hair and nails, while antioxidant and collagen supplements can help with sun damage and wrinkles.

Dietary supplements cannot replace the importance of a complete, nutrient-dense diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy proteins and fats. However, adding a daily vitamin supplement may help meet specific needs, fill nutrient gaps, or be essential based on your overall intake.
